Sean Matthew Keener Memorial Scholarship Fund

The Sean Matthew Keener Memorial Scholarship Fund was established in 1991 by Lee Keener ’67 in memory of his son, Sean. Income from the Fund is to be awarded annually in an amount that represents a portion of the interest earned on the principal in the Sean Keener Memorial Scholarship Fund, the exact amount being determined by the Trustees of Amherst College or their designates. The scholarship is offered in memory of a very fine young man, son of Lee Keener ’67 and Aleta Deming Keener (Russell Sage ’72), killed at age fifteen in an automobile accident. The criteria, given in decreasing order of importance, are: 1) preference to a student in good academic standing, entering his or her junior year; 2) someone with outstanding moral character, compassion and integrity; 3) recipient should have a substantial record of working with handicapped or underprivileged children; 4) student should be majoring in fine arts or astronomy, or planning a career in pediatrics, social work, primary education, or architecture.
