G. Henry Whitcomb 1864 Scholarship Fund
The G. Henry Whitcomb 1864 Scholarship Fund was established in 1921 at the time of the Centennial Drive as a memorial to G. Henry Whitcomb of Worcester, MA. He was the father of the three donors: David Whitcomb ’00, Ernest M. Whitcomb ’04, and Harry E. Whitcomb ’94. In a letter from Ernest Whitcomb of 1934, the following guidelines for the Fund were established: 1) The income of the Fund is to be expended by the Trustees in the instruction, development, and/or maintenance of a course in moral philosophy following the principles so beneficially established and taught in Amherst College by Professor Charles E. Garman, the instruction in this moral philosophy course to include the fundamental meaning and values of human life, the place of purpose and choice in the development of character, the principles involved in right relationships among men and in human institutions and the responsibilities of educated intelligence to society. 2) If, at any time within five years from January 1, 1921 this type of philosophy course should not be taught, then the Donors shall designate such other collegiate use of the Fund, as seems to them most desirable. 3) Should occasion arise when the income of this fund might be utilized to a better educational advantage, the use thereof may be changed upon the approval of the Board of Trustees and the approval of the Donors.
