William Lyman Cowles 1878 Fund

By the will of William Lyman Cowles upon his death in 1957, this Fund is applied toward the total expenses of the Dept. of Romance Languages. The will allowed the College to vote upon a modification of the intended use of the fund and such a modification took place in 1963 (making the fund as it is at present). W.L. Cowles was an Amherst Professor of Latin Language and Literature. (According to the R.E.F. Ledger: This fund has a preference to descendants of members of the Class of 1878. If there is not such an individual, then this fund contributes to general scholarship.)
